Two second sepration

Recently watched the RFTW Pod Cast and learned that the separation between bikes on the ride will be two seconds. These are the speed / distance calculations for the two second separation.

MPH - Distance in feet

30 - 88

40 - 117

50 - 147

60 - 176

70 - 205 - This is equivalent to nearly 70 paces behind the rider in front of you.

This will significantly increase the size of the foot print of the group.

GROUP RIDING

When we head out with our motorcycle clubs, friends, or groups, managing our time and space is extremely important. When riding staggered in a group, the 2 second rule can be followed easily. Take a look at the diagram below:

group riding 2 second rule

When the bike in front of back wheel passes anything/object you count one thousand one, one thousand two. Your front wheel should be at that point at one thousand two. The bike opposite of you one thousand one and you should be at that point. Anything different, then you are either too far away or too close. Those are AMA rules that governs motorcycle safety.

Keep in mind also, your spacing should increase in fowl weather. (Rain)
